Privacy and Facebook, will it matter?
I’ve posted before on the topic of what, if anything, could lead to Facebook’s demise. They are on such a roll right now that it would seem impossible to slow them down but all things end. Myspace looked to be on the same path at one point and there was a time when Microsoft seemed unbeatable in any software category. Its true. There is a lot of buzz in the tech blogs about Facebook and privacy and people leaving Facebook as a result. I quick honestly don’t think it will have an impact. What could have an impact, in my opinion, is if Facebook becomes “uncool.” College kids are often anti-establishment and Facebook has become part of the establishment. If a group of popular students stop using Facebook and take their social activity somewhere else, that could start a reverse viral situation. I don’t think its likely to happen now or to happen quickly but I think that the “cool” factor is an important force not measured in analyst reports. But the privacy stuff. I don’t think it has an impact. People go to Facebook to share. They may take a closer look at their settings and they may be more careful about what they post but a few privacy nuts shutting down their account won’t make a difference in Facebook’s trajectory. I still think Google and Twitter should be watching their backs.
