A look at social media, mobile and web 2.0 by an MIT nerd

Is it all about mobile or really just all about the iPhone

I’ve been involved with mobile devices, software and infrastructure for the past 10 years in one way or another so I’ve had the benefit of seeing new devices ahead of launch, experience new technologies before they were available to consumers and certainly listened to industry experts predict the future. I’ve had Blackberrys, a Danger sidekick, Windows mobile devices. I’ve played with Android devices, Nokia and Samsung smartphones but no matter what I carried, nothing changed my behavior until the I got the iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my Blackberry and was an addict like many others but I used it for email and voice and that is about it. Occasionally I would check a sports score if I were stuck somewhere during an important play off game but it was business as usual, voice & email with a text message or 2 thrown in. The iPhone is different and even with all the catch-up going on I have yet to see any device that impacts people the way the iPhone does. I’ve found myself sitting in my living room with my laptop open and reaching for my iPhone rather than my laptop (which is already booted up and online) to do certain tasks. I registered for Facebook in 2005 but never really started using it until my iPhone. I’m not a gamer but I have found myself playing games on the iPhone. I got more into Twitter with the iPhone. They’ve not only made it easy, they’ve made it fun. I can’t put it down and I don’t see anything on the horizon that is even close. I knowingly switched from Verizon which has great coverage in my areas of importance to AT&T which has been miserable in those same areas. I knew that going in, it has proven true and I would never switch back. In my opinion, it is game set match…Apple.
